Peter Maivia, during his lifetime, was a famed Samoan-American professional wrestler and promoter. His wife, Lia Maivia, also worked as a wrestler promoter.
Ata has two brothers named Toa Maivia and Peter Maivia Jr.
Following the death of their father in 1982, Peter Maivia Jr. became a wrestler.

Ata got married to Rocky Johnson, a professional wrestler, in 1970.
The reports disclosed they met through a wrestling match where Ata’s brother, Peter Maivia Jr., was paired with Rocky to fight a tag team match.
Her father, Peter, however, didn’t agree to their relationship because he knew how busy the schedule of wrestlers is.
She turned deaf ears to her father’s word and went on to marry Rocky Johnson.
