Renowned author Nicholas Evans, famous for ‘The Horse Whisperer,’ passes away at 72 due to heart attack

Nicholas Evans, the acclaimed English writer known for penning The Horse Whisperer, has passed away at the age of 72 after suffering a heart attack.

His agency confirmed the sudden demise of the best-selling author on Tuesday, August 15.

In a statement released today, it was announced, “United Agents are very sad to announce the sudden death of the celebrated best-selling author Nicholas Evans who died suddenly on Tuesday this week following a heart attack, aged 72.”

Published in 1995, The Horse Whisperer sold approximately 15 million copies globally and became the top-selling book in 20 countries.

The novel was later adapted for the silver screen, with Hollywood icon Robert Redford portraying the title character and Scarlett Johansson in her breakthrough role as young rider Grace MacLean.

Kristin Scott Thomas played the role of her mother, Annie, and Sam Neill portrayed her father, Robert.

Born in Worcestershire in 1950, Evans went on to pursue law at Oxford University and graduated with first-class honors.

He commenced his career as a journalist at the Evening Chronicle in Newcastle before transitioning to television.

Evans produced documentaries on US politics and the Middle East for the current affairs show Weekend World.

By the 1980s, he was at London Weekend Television, creating documentaries on Sir Laurence Olivier, Francis Bacon, and David Hockney for The South Bank Show.

In September 2008, Evans battled for his life after consuming poisonous mushrooms and underwent a kidney transplant, with his daughter as the organ donor.

Nicholas Evans is survived by his wife Charlotte and their four children, Finlay, Lauren, Max, and Harry.
